OpenAI Announced a New Roll Out Support for Plugins in ChatGPT

OpenAI said it will first distribute the plugins to a small group of users to “examine their real-world use and impact.” OpenAI-offered ChatGPT may now retrieve data from online sources and communicate with external websites with the help of Artificial Intelligence.

The plugin feature will first only be accessible to a restricted group of users before expanding to “larger-scale access” while it is still in its “limited” alpha stage. According to a March 23 announcement from the company, users must register for a waitlist in order to access the new feature on Chat GPT Plus.

There are only 11 plugins available at the moment. These plugins enable users to do various things, such as check the results of live sporting events, book an international flight, and order food for delivery. In order to evaluate its practical application, the company noted that it is “gradually rolling out plugins.”

According to OpenAI, “plugins are tools created expressly for language models with safety as a basic tenet. In addition, it allows ChatGPT to access up-to-date data, execute computations, or use third-party services.

The new plugin feature supports a number of websites, including the travel search engines Expedia and KAYAK. In addition, the e-commerce platforms Shopify, Klarna, and Instacart.

As per the release, it supports Slack, one of the most popular business chat apps, and the math calculator Wolfram for calculations.

How does it access the web?

ChatGPT uses a text-based web browser to interact with web pages and traverse search results. On the other hand, it also conducts information searches using the Bing API.

It can combine data from various sources to produce a more well-rounded result. ChatGPT cites its sources in order for users to confirm the authenticity of the data.

The company introduced ChatGPT on November 30. OpenAI claimed there is a significant increase in demand from its user base for plugin capabilities.

On March 23, Mitchell Hashimoto, the founder of the software company HashiCorp and an early user of the ChatGPT plugin API, tweeted to his 94,300 followers that the program is one of the “most remarkable” he has ever used.

One of ChatGPT’s perhaps largest flaws is that it is only trained with data up to September 2021 and lacks internet access to retrieve more up-to-date data. Being able to employ plugins that access the internet could address this issue.
