X will soon modify the functionality of its block button. As a result, it will allow blocked accounts to view public posts from users who have blocked them. Independent app researcher Nima Owji highlighted this feature. Elon Musk has confirmed this update.
Details of the X Update
Musk clarified in a tweet that the block function will prevent blocked accounts from engaging with users. However, it will not restrict them from seeing public posts. He mentioned, “The block function will block that account from engaging with, but not block seeing, public posts”. According to Owji, users may no longer see the “You’re blocked…” message when visiting the profile of someone who has blocked them. Instead, they can view the account’s public posts as if they were any other user.
Implications of the Change
This change allows blocked users to see public content. However, there will still be limitations on actions such as reposting, quoting, or replying to posts from blocked accounts. The exact timeline for when these changes will take effect remains unclear.
Musk expressed that it was “high time this happened,” referencing a previous loophole where blocked users could simply log out to view public tweets from blocked accounts. This update appears to be a move to close that workaround.
