Sony Introduces New PlayStation 5 Pro

Sony has launched the PlayStation 5 Pro, a mid-generation upgrade for the PS5 gaming console. The company revealed this new model during a special presentation on September 10. The PS5 Pro boasts significant performance enhancements alongside minor design tweaks. In addition, it will be available starting November 7 in select regions.

The PlayStation 5 Pro is priced at $699.99 in the United States and comes with a 2TB SSD. The console includes a DualSense wireless controller and a pre-installed copy of Astro’s Playroom. It’s essential to note that the PS5 Pro is a disc-less console. However, it is compatible with the PS5’s Disc Drive. Additionally, the company will sell it separately.

Pre-orders for the PS5 Pro will commence on September 26 at direct.playstation.com. Select retailers will start taking pre-orders on October 10 in areas where the platform is unavailable.

PlayStation 5 Pro: What’s New

The PS5 Pro is an entirely new console. However, it is an upgrade to the current PS5 lineup. It retains a similar design but features stripe-like vents on either side. According to Sony’s press release, the new model can deliver higher fidelity graphics and smoother frame rates of 60 frames per second, surpassing the standard PS5.

The PS5 Pro incorporates a new graphics processing unit (GPU) with 67% more Compute Units. In addition, it has a 28% faster memory than its predecessor. Thus, this results in gameplay rendering up to 45% faster. Furthermore, the console enhances ray tracing capabilities, providing more dynamic reflections and light refraction in games.

A fast PS5 can cast rays at up to three times the speed of a PS5 using advanced ray tracing. The PS5 Pro also introduces PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. In addition, it is an AI-driven upscaling technique that enhances visual detail, sharpness, and clarity. Other improvements include Wi-Fi 7 connectivity, variable refresh rates (VRR), and support for 8K resolution gaming.

Sony has confirmed that several existing video games will receive a free software update to utilize the new features of the PS5 Pro. “PS5 Pro Enhanced” labels will appear on these titles. Some of the games slated for updates include:

  • Assassin’s Creed: Shadows
  • Demon’s Souls
  • Dragon’s Dogma 2
  • Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
  • Gran Turismo 7
  • Hogwarts Legacy
  • Horizon Forbidden West
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
  • The Crew Motorfest
  • The First Descendant
  • The Last of Us Part II Remastered

Additionally, a new feature called “Game Boost” will enhance and stabilize the performance of supported PS4 and PS5 games. Additionally, it includes over 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 titles. Sony also mentioned that Enhanced Image Quality for select PS4 games will be available on the PS5 Pro to improve resolution.
