Instagram and Facebook’s parent company, Meta, has unveiled a brand-new premium “blue tick” user authentication system. Currently, this verified service is likely to be available in New Zealand and Australia. The subscription plan for Instagram and Facebook also includes extra security against impersonation.
A few weeks ago, the Elon Musk-led team at Twitter introduced a comparable authentication tool. A government-issued ID card can be used by paying individuals to have their Facebook and Instagram profiles verified.
Verification Badge or Blue Tick: What is it?
Verified badges on Instagram and Facebook display next to the name of the account or page and in search results.
Showing that the platform has confirmed that an account is an authentic presence of the creative, public person, celebrity, or global brand it represents, aids users in finding the accounts they want to follow more quickly.
The price of Blue Tick
According to a Reuters story, users of Apple’s iOS will pay a starting monthly price of US$ 11.99, while users of other platforms would pay US$ 14.99.
A direct comparison may indicate that this service is relatively more pricey than Twitter, even though the costs for India have not yet been made public. According to the social media network, Twitter Blue costs Rs. 900 for users of the mobile app and Rs. 650 for web users.
The eligibility requirement
According to reports, candidates for a Meta Verified profile must be older than 18 years old, have a thorough profile, and have a lead photograph that shows the user’s face. In order to authenticate the account, they must also meet the basic activity requirements and present a government-issued ID. The program does not accept business profiles.
The signup and verification processes must be repeated if the user wants to modify their account username, profile name, photo, or date of birth.
In order to diversify their revenues and lessen their dependency on advertising, some platforms are investigating new revenue streams. This includes services that require a membership, as we have seen with Twitter Blue and the forthcoming subscription service from Meta. But for the foreseeable future, advertising will probably continue to be a substantial source of income for social media platforms.
