OpenAI Unveils New GPT-4o Mini

OpenAI

OpenAI has recently introduced GPT-4o mini, its latest compact AI model. In addition, it aims to cater to the needs of developers and consumers alike. This new model is a more affordable and faster alternative to OpenAI’s current state-of-the-art AI models.

It will be available for developers immediately. However, the enterprise users may gain access next week. Additionally, it is accessible to consumers through the ChatGPT web and mobile app.

Superior Performance in Reasoning Task

OpenAI

OpenAI claims that GPT-4o mini outperforms leading small AI models in tasks involving reasoning with text and vision. As small AI models continue to evolve, they are gaining traction among developers. This is due to their swiftness and cost-effectiveness, especially compared to larger models such as GPT-4 Omni or Claude 3.5 Sonnet. These smaller models are particularly for high-volume, routine tasks that developers may frequently demand from an AI model.

Benchmark Scores and Affordability

The GPT-4o mini replaces the GPT-3.5 Turbo as OpenAI’s smallest model, scoring 82% on the MMLU reasoning benchmark. Further, it has surpassed Gemini 1.5 Flash and Claude 3 Haiku.

Additionally, on MGSM, a benchmark for mathematical reasoning, GPT-4o mini scores 87%, outshining Flash and Haiku. Notably, OpenAI emphasizes that GPT-4o mini is significantly more cost-efficient than its predecessors. Thus, it boasts a cost over 60% lower than GPT-3.5 Turbo.

Future-Ready Capabilities of OpenAI

As of today, GPT-4o mini supports text and vision in the API, with plans to incorporate video and audio capabilities in the future. OpenAI’s ambition to make AI more accessible and affordable is due to the pricing structure for developers building on the API. In addition, it is likely at 15 cents per million input tokens and 60 cents per million output tokens.

OpenAI Enterprise Solutions

In a separate announcement, OpenAI revealed new tools for enterprise customers. Additionally, it includes the Enterprise Compliance API tailored to assist businesses in regulated industries to comply with logging and audit requirements. This API offers administrators detailed records of time-stamped interactions, conversations, uploaded files, workspace users, and more.

Furthermore, admins now have enhanced control over workspace GPTs. As a result, it enables them to create an approved list of domains that GPTs can interact with, catering to specific business use cases.
