OpenAI introduced a new way to interact with ChatGPT: an interface called “canvas.” This product opens a separate window beside the normal chat window. Thus, it provides a workspace for writing and coding projects. Users can generate writing or code directly in the canvas. Additionally, they can highlight sections of their work for the model to edit. The canvas feature is rolling out in beta to ChatGPT Plus and Teams users. However, the company plans to extend it to Enterprise and Edu users next week.
OpenAI Convergence of Editable Workspaces
Several consumer AI providers are converging around editable workspaces as a practical way to utilize generative AI. ChatGPT’s new interface offers features similar to Anthropic’s Artifacts, launched in June, and the popular coding companion, Cursor. OpenAI is racing to match competitor offerings and launch entirely new capabilities in ChatGPT to grow its paid user base.
Enhancements for Project Management
AI chatbots struggle to complete large projects from a single prompt. However, they can create a good starting point. Editable workspaces like Canvas allow users to correct parts of an AI chatbot’s output without needing to scrutinize their prompt or generate a new stretch of code. OpenAI product manager Daniel Levine described this as a more natural interface for collaborating with ChatGPT.
Features of the Canvas Interface
To use the canvas, users had to select “GPT-4o with canvas” from ChatGPT’s model picker. However, OpenAI states that canvas windows will automatically pop out when ChatGPT detects that a separate workspace could be beneficial, such as for longer outputs or complex coding tasks. Users can also type “use canvas” to open a project window.
Writing and Coding Capabilities of OpenAI New Interface
The new features could assist in writing an email. Users can prompt ChatGPT to generate an email, which will appear in the canvas window. They can adjust the writing length using a slider. Additionally, they can highlight specific sentences to request changes, such as making the tone friendlier or adding emojis. Further, users can ask ChatGPT to rewrite the email in another language.
For coding, the canvas offers slightly different features. Users can prompt ChatGPT to create an API web server in Python, which appears in the canvas window. By pressing an “add comments” button, ChatGPT can add in-line documentation to explain the code in plain English. Users can highlight code sections to ask ChatGPT for explanations or questions about it. A new “review code” button will suggest specific edits for the code. As a result, it will allow users to approve, edit, or decline the suggestions. If approved, ChatGPT will attempt to fix any bugs.
OpenAI Future Plans for Canvas
Once the canvas feature is out of beta, OpenAI plans to offer it to free users. Thus, it will expand access to this innovative tool.
