New York-based transportation software provider Via has purchased the mapping app Citymapper for an unknown price.

A $110 million (£90.5 million) round at a $3.5 billion valuation last month provided the funding for Via’s acquisition of Citymapper. At the time, Via stated that it would use this to expand its portfolio.

While Citymapper’s total funding is still undisclosed, Dealroom reports that it had already raised $58.7 million (£48.3 million) from companies like Index Ventures, Balderton Capital, and Connect Ventures.

“By bringing our teams together, we see an exciting potential to give Citymapper’s capabilities to cities and transit agencies all across the world so that they can create the most user-friendly and pertinent transit experience for their communities,” said Daniel Ramot, co-founder and CEO of Via.

The 2011-founded Citymapper software enables users to organize and navigate their travels in more than 100 locations worldwide. Citymapper is available for free, but it makes money from subscriptions, referral fees, and licensing fees for its enterprise solution.

City transportation providers use Via to plan and coordinate their public transportation systems.

With the acquisition, Via will merge the London-based company’s data and technology into its transport platform to deliver a “unified solution” for passengers, transit operators, and cities.

We share this ambition with Via. In addition, with this acquisition, we can grow Citymapper’s user base, and make our technology available to cities and transportation agencies. Additionally, this will increase the benefit to the communities we serve, according to Azmat Yusuf, founder, and CEO of Citymapper.
