In response to the Digital Markets Act (DMA) in the European Economic Area (EEA), Microsoft has taken significant steps to ensure compliance. The operating system (OS) has undergone various modifications. Thus, this will give users the freedom to choose between providers and uninstall most in-box apps.

Windows Central reports that these changes include the ability to uninstall the Microsoft Edge web browser. In addition, users can remove Bing Search from the Windows Search pane.
Microsoft now allows users to uninstall more built-in apps. Users cannot uninstall only two system apps, such as File Explorer and Phone Link. Furthermore, the company is introducing an update to the Widgets Board. Additionally, it will allow users to disable the Microsoft News and Ads feed. However, they can still retain widgets for those who find them useful.

It’s important to note that these changes are currently specific to Windows 11 PCs in the EEA. Additionally, it remains uncertain whether users outside this region will have access to them, as per the report. These modifications will first be available for preview on Windows 11 through the Insider Beta Channel in the coming weeks before being made generally available early next year. Microsoft aims to achieve full DMA compliance for Windows 11 by March 6, 2024. In addition, they plan to implement similar changes to Windows 10 by that time.
