The California Film Commission has confirmed that “Michael,” the biopic about Michael Jackson, will be eligible for more than $21 million in tax credits.
According to “Variety,” the California Film Commission has revealed the most recent round of credit allocations, totaling $81.7 million for 24 films. As per the commission, Michael will result in more “qualifying” in-state investment of $120 million than any other project throughout the 14-year history of the tax credit program.
In January, the project got revealed, and Jaafar, Jackson’s nephew, was cast as the lead. The Jackson estate executors John Branca and John McClain, are working with Graham King to produce.
According to “Variety,” the project is controversial. In a Guardian opinion piece, Dan Reed, the director of the documentary “Leaving Neverland,” which claimed Jackson had sexually assaulted two young boys, attacked the upcoming movie, claiming it “will glorify a guy who raped children.”
According to the state film commission, the Thomas Crown Affair will receive $13.8 million, and an unnamed Disney live-action movie will receive $11.3 million. After receiving $19.6 million in August of last year, “The Thomas Crown Affair” withdrew its request and reapplied.
‘Michael’ received a $21.1 million reward, making it one of the state’s greatest credit distributions ever. Bumblebee received $22.3 million, Space Jam 2 received $21.8 million, and Top Gun: Maverick received $21.4 million from California in the past. For the state’s 20% tax credit, only the first $100 million of “qualifying” in-state spending is taken into account.
