Google has announced an exciting new feature for its Docs users, enhancing the web editor experience. The new Document Tabs feature builds upon the existing Document Outline feature, primarily designed for managing headlines. This innovative addition allows users to add tabs to their Google Docs documents. In addition, it will significantly improve the viewing, editing, and organization of content. Google first unveiled the feature alongside several other AI-enhanced tools at Google’s Cloud Next 2024 event in April.
Google Rollout of Document Tabs
The rollout of the Document Tabs feature has officially begun. However, it is currently exclusive to the web editor. Previously referred to as ‘Show outline,’ users will now see a new option labeled ‘Show tabs and outlines’ after the server-side update.
Enhanced Document Navigation
Upon selecting this new option, users will gain access to a column on the left side of the document. As a result, it will allow them to add tabs (or sections) to existing docs. This feature enhances functionality. In addition, it will provide users with a clearer visual representation of their document’s structure. Thus, it will present the entire layout, including tabs and subtabs, in one view. The tab system simplifies navigation. Additionally, it will make it easier for users to move through their documents.
Google Customization and Linking Options
Initially, users will see a default ‘Tab 1,’ after which they can add additional tabs and customize them, including the option to add subtabs. Google has indicated that users can link the tabs. As a result, it will enable users to share links to specific tabs rather than the entire document. Additionally, users can incorporate emojis for tab headings, adding a fun personal touch.
Availability Timeline
The Document Tabs feature has started rolling out. However, Google has noted that it may take up to 15 days for all users to see the feature. In 1-3 days after the feature is rolled out, it will be available to all users by October 21, 2024. This feature will be accessible to all Google Workspace customers, Google Workspace Individual subscribers, and users with personal Google accounts.
