Google Experiments a New Ad Slot on the Play Store

Google

Google is experimenting with a new Play Store ad slot before its I/O developer conference in May. It will give developers access to additional premium real estate for their app marketing efforts.

In addition, the update can increase the company’s Play Store search advertisements business. It is possible if it is made available to the general public.

The test took place two years after Apple made a comparable change. In addition, it included a new ad slot on the store’s Search tab rather than just at the top of search results.

About the Ad Slot by Google

Similar to Apple, Google is also experimenting with an advertisement. It shows up when Android users go to the Play Store’s search menu and enter keywords to look for apps.

The Android news site Android Police was the first to notice the test. In addition, it highlighted that Google had been experimenting with “recommendations” for apps in this area since late last year.

Google had explained that the app promotions at the time weren’t advertising. However, it is rather individualized recommendations.

This has changed because the same advertisement now features both app recommendations and suggestions, marked as advertisements.

However, not everyone is yet to see the ads. Thus, this suggests this was probably a test, as Google has since acknowledged.

It’s not a U.S.-only upgrade because users have reported seeing the test in several regions globally.

Closing Note

A Google representative verified the trial when contacted for comment. In addition, it mentioned that the company occasionally tries new features on the Play Store.

They didn’t provide any other details about this specific ad test. However, it indicates that Google doesn’t want to leak the news of an upcoming announcement. Or possibly the ETA for a public debut has not yet been determined.
