Through the iOS 18.1 developer beta, Apple has introduced the first features of Apple Intelligence, its AI suite. This marks the first opportunity for users to experience the capabilities of Apple Intelligence.
Usage Limitations and Access Requirements
The availability of Apple Intelligence features in iOS 18.1 is for a few users. Initially, only users with iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPad and Mac with M1 will be able to access these features in beta, provided their device language is set to U.S. English. Additionally, users must set their device region to the U.S., although this does not impact the App Store region.
To utilize the Apple Intelligence features, users need to navigate to the new Apple Intelligence & Siri menu under settings and tap on “join waitlist.” Upon acceptance from the waitlist, users will receive a notification to access the features. It’s important to note that downloading models related to the AI suite may take some time. Thus, it may result in a delay before all features become available.
Available Features in Apple iOS 18.1
The current rollout of iOS 18.1 introduces several new features powered by Apple Intelligence. Notably, Siri now features new animations. In addition, users can prompt Siri using text by double-tapping on the bottom bar. Additionally, this new feature integrates with writing tools. As a result, it enables text proofreading, rewriting, and tone modification options such as “Friendly,” “Professional,” and “Concise.”
The Mail app also receives enhancements. In addition, it includes a summarization feature, the ability to view priority emails at the top of the inbox, and one-line email summaries without opening them. Furthermore, smart replies are available to facilitate quick responses to emails.
Another notable addition is the Apple Intelligence-powered Focus Mode called “Reduce Interruptions.” In addition, it leverages AI to display only essential notifications.
Ongoing Development and Future Features of Apple Intelligence
Despite the current features, the Apple Intelligence suite still lacks certain functionalities, such as ChatGPT integration and Image Playground. According to Bloomberg’s reporting, Apple is actively addressing bugs related to these new features. As a result, it indicates that users may need to wait for the full suite of features to become available for testing.
