Later this year, according to Nokia’s plans, the moon will get a 4G internet connection. For the first time since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972, people will set foot on the moon as part of NASA’s Artemis 1 mission.
The closed telecom company, which should not be confused with HMD Global, which manufactures phones under the Nokia brand, intends to launch a SpaceX rocket in the near future to deploy a 4G network on the moon.
A solar-powered rover will power the network. In addition, an antenna-equipped base station housed in a Nova-C lunar lander. The lander and the rover establish an LTE connection.
The technology, according to Nokia, is made to resist harsh conditions in space. The company intends to demonstrate that terrestrial networks can support future space missions’ communication requirements.

The 4G network on the moon will also allow astronauts to communicate with one another and have mission control. They can also send rovers, real-time video, and other things through the network.
NASA chose Nokia to build the first mobile network on the moon in 2020. Yet, it was most likely that the solution’s initial deployment took place in late 2022. According to Nokia, the network will autonomously configure itself once it is installed.
