Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., announced the launch of its second cloud region in Italy, highlighting the nation’s efforts to develop into a major cloud computing powerhouse.
With one already in place in Milan, the second cloud region debuts in Turin in northern Italy. Cloud regions are groups of data centers situated in one area. This will help local consumers to access data more quickly.
In order to fulfill the needs of the Italian economy, this new area joins the newly established Google Cloud region in Milan. It will offer highly accessible, sustainable cloud services with data sovereignty and residency functionality.
Italian businesses now have quicker access to the worldwide network of Google Cloud infrastructure as it joins 35 additional Google Cloud regions around the world.
The Google Cloud Services for the New Area
Three cloud zones and their standard services, including Compute Engine, Google Kubernetes Engine, Cloud Storage, Persistent Disk, CloudSQL, and Cloud Identity, are available at the new region’s launch. Critical features like data residency restrictions, default encryption, organizational regulations, and VPC Service Controls will also offer advantages to the customers.
Enrico Bagnasco, executive director for information systems at Intesa Sanpaolo, stated in the blog that a cloud hyperscaler with two regions on the national territory, like Google, will make it easier for all Italian businesses and the government to access the cloud.
The New Opportunity for the Country
Google stated in the blog, citing information from an independent study, that the Google Cloud areas of Milan and Turin may create a new market with a potential worth of almost 1.90 billion euros ($2.07 billion) over a three-year period through 2025.
“According to Elio Schiavo, Chief Enterprise and Innovative Solutions Officer of TIM, “Our relationship with Google Cloud is vital for the digitalization process of businesses, government agencies, and citizens.
The availability of low latency, connection, and data sovereignty features is made possible by the two areas, which are a significant outcome of this collaboration. Hence, it is a strategic infrastructure that will bring about significant economic gains. In addition, it has positive effects for the entire industrial sector on a national level.”
