Google Chat Unveils New Huddles Feature

Google Chat has launched a new ‘huddles’ feature. In addition, it enables users to initiate meetings swiftly while chatting with colleagues. This feature includes a shortcut for starting an audio call in a picture-in-picture mode. Additionally, it has the option to add video or screen sharing once other participants join.

The Huddles feature shares its name with a similar offering from competitor Slack. It will function across direct messages, group chats, and spaces within Google Chat. The rollout of the huddles feature is currently underway for users on Rapid Release domains, with full availability expected by December 20. Users on Scheduled Release domains will have to wait a bit longer, as the rollout may begin on January 6, 2025.

Starting Huddles in Google Chat

According to Google, users can start huddles from direct messages, group chats, and spaces. Initially, a huddle will begin as an audio call. However, users can activate their video after joining. Features, such as screen sharing are available in Google Meet. In addition, it will also be accessible during huddles.

Slack’s Huddle Feature: A Comparable Option

Slack has offered a comparable feature since 2021, enhancing it with video support a year later. Users can utilize the huddle feature on slack’s mobile and desktop applications.

How to Initiate a Huddle in Google Chat

To initiate a huddle in Google Chat, users can click the downward-facing arrow next to the call button in a direct message or group chat window and select “Start a huddle.” This action will open a small picture-in-picture call at the bottom right corner of the screen, complete with buttons for mute, video (disabled by default), screen sharing, and ending the call.

Users have the flexibility to resize the huddle window. In addition, it is particularly useful when another participant is sharing their screen or if they have activated their camera. The picture-in-picture mode allows users to continue using Google Chat while participating in the call.
