Amazon announced that Amazon Music Unlimited subscribers will now have access to one free audiobook per month from Audible’s extensive catalog. This strategic move will compete with Spotify’s growing presence in the audiobook market. In addition, it will encourage Amazon Music users to consider purchasing Audible books or subscriptions.
Details of the New Amazon Offering
Subscribers of the top-tier plan in the U.S., U.K., and Canada can choose any audiobook they wish from Audible’s library. As a result, it boasts over a million titles. Users can continue to listen to their selected audiobook across multiple billing cycles or opt for a new title each month.
Steve Boom, VP of Audio, Twitch, and Games for Amazon, stated, “Amazon Music introduces the audiobook category to a brand-new audience by making Audible’s industry-leading catalog of audiobooks available to Amazon Music Unlimited subscribers.”
Competitive Landscape
This new feature comes as Spotify has emerged as the No. 2 audiobook provider. Additionally, it offers a selection of free audiobooks to its Premium subscribers in various countries, including the U.S. and U.K. Earlier this year, Spotify also launched an audiobook-only plan. Thus, it allows users on its free tier to access audiobooks with a 15-hour listening limit.
In contrast, Audible provides a $7.95 monthly plan. In addition, it includes original audiobooks, sleep tracks, and podcasts, alongside a $14.95 plan. Additionally, it offers one premium title per month, featuring bestsellers and new releases.
Enhancements to Amazon Book Recommendations
Amazon has been actively enhancing its book recommendation systems across its platforms. Last December, the company introduced the “Your Books” tracker. In addition, it integrates titles purchased or saved from Amazon, including those from Kindle and Audible. Additionally, Amazon plans to leverage Prime Video data to offer personalized audiobook suggestions to Audible users.
