Instagram head Adam Mosseri announced that Threads users connected to the fediverse, also known as the open social web, can now see who follows them. In addition, they can like their posts from other fediverse servers such as Mastodon and Pixelfed. This feature enhances the interconnected experience for users across different platforms.
Extended Editing Time for Posts
In addition to the new fediverse features, the company has increased the time users have to edit their posts on the social network to 15 minutes. Additionally, this is a significant improvement from the previous five-minute limit. As a result, it will allow users more flexibility to make adjustments.
Accessing Fediverse Interactions
Users can tap on a post’s activity or follower list to view a complete list of followers and likes from other fediverse servers. To access these details, users need to click on the “fediverse followers” or “fediverse likes” section. Thus, it will provide a clearer view of their interactions across platforms.
Deepening Ties with the Fediverse
This announcement follows Threads’ gradual integration with the fediverse over the past several months, having first allowed users to connect their accounts back in March. Recently, users have also been able to see fediverse replies on others’ posts, further enriching the content available on Threads.

Users can view fediverse replies on their posts since June. However, they currently cannot respond to replies from other servers. However, Meta has indicated that this feature is under development. Thus, this signals a commitment to enhancing user engagement across the fediverse.

With nearly 200 million users, Threads has become the largest social network to adopt ActivityPub, the decentralized social networking protocol connecting the fediverse, which has over 12 million total users. According to Mosseri, users who have connected their accounts to the fediverse will have their Threads posts shared to the fediverse 15 minutes after the edit window closes. This allows users to finalize their posts before they are visible to a broader audience.
